چکیده

The Stratospheric Aerosol and Gas Experiment III instrument on the International Space Station (SAGE III/ISS) has been making high quality solar occultation measurements of stratospheric water vapor since June 2017. Here we evaluate large-scale geophysical variability SAGE III/ISS for first 3 years observations (2017–2020) as part data validation retrieval version 5.1 (v5.1). Detailed comparisons v5.1 with Aura Microwave Limb Sounder (MLS) 5 retrievals show overall excellent agreement in terms seasonal mean structure variability. capture well-known variations including vertically propagating “tape recorder” tropics lower maxima linked to NH summer monsoons. vertical resolution (?2 km) from demonstrate contributions monsoons wet phase during Northern Hemisphere (NH) summer. We furthermore relative humidity (RH) derived measurements, highlighting detailed behavior links thermal near tropical tropopause. Stratospheric water vapor feedback.

We show here that stratospheric water vapor variations play an important role in the evolution of our climate. This comes from analysis of observations showing that stratospheric water vapor increases with tropospheric temperature, implying the existence of a stratospheric water vapor feedback. We estimate the strength of this feedback in a chemistry-climate model to be +0.3 W/(m(2)⋅K), which w...

Isotopic composition of stratospheric water vapor: Measurements and photochemistry

We present a photochemical model describing the changes in the isotopic composition of stratospheric water vapor that result from methane oxidation and reactions with O( ). We then compare model calculations with measurements made with the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory far-infrared spectrometer during seven balloon flights that took place between 1989 and 1997. The agreement between the...

Isotopic composition of stratospheric water vapor: Implications for transport

We develop a series of models of transport in the upper tropical troposphere in order to explain the observed abundance and isotopic composition of stratospheric water vapor. We start with the Rayleigh fractionation process and add the effects of mixing and recirculation of stratospheric air through the upper troposphere. We compare our measurements with model calculations for a range of input ...

Spectroscopic measurements of stratospheric nitric oxide and water vapor.

Spectroscopic measurements have been made of the nitric oxide and water vapor concentrations in the stratosphere at an altitude of 28 kilometers. The measurements, carried out in situ with the use of a spin flip Raman laser, represent the first accurate determination of nitric oxide as a function of time (as the sun rose) from about 6: 30 to 14: 00 C. Impact of stratospheric water vapor trends on ozone chemistry

Introduction Conclusions References Tables Figures Back Close Abstract Introduction Conclusions References Tables Figures Back Close Abstract A transient model simulation from 1960 to 2000 with the coupled climate-chemistry model (CCM) ECHAM4.L39(DLR)/CHEM shows a stratospheric water vapor trend during the last two decades of +0.7 ppmv and additionally a short-term increase during volcanic erup...
